As the war in Iraq drags on, Pentagon recruiting tactics in our nation's schools have become increasingly sly, misleading and invasive. Additionally, a little-known provisions of Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act" requires schools with federal funding to give recruiters access to students' personal information unless students "opt-out." Our staff cooperate on the local, state and national level in initiatives to protect student privacy and prevent exploitation of economically disadvantaged youth who may have few alternatives to fighting in wars they may conscientiously oppose, by:
Alternatives:Another abuse of individual privacy, the requirement in the "No Child Left Behind Act" that forces high schools receiving federal funding to release the private information of millions of teenagers and young adults to military recruiters and a private marketing firm. Consent and notification of the students or their parents is not required. Furthermore, there is no way of blocking the calls and other recruiting practices by normal procedures.
